Objectives:
- Computer programmer / web designer (full time).
Skills and Qualifications:
- 17 years programming experience: 8 at Cambridge University
in Computer Based Training (CBT).
- Programming languages : Visual Basic (4+ years experience),
Java, SQL, Pascal, C, Assembly code and some scripting languages.
- Web-page design:
- HTML, Dreamweaver, Fireworks and FrontPage.
- XML and Javascript, CSS.
- Search Engine Optimization
- Other packages:
- Databases: MS Access, FilemakerPro
- Graphics: Fireworks, Photoshop, Graphic Converter, GIF Converter
- CBT: WebCT, ToolBook, Authorware and Hypercard.
- General: MS Office, Claris works
- Other Multimedia packages: Premiere, SoundEdit, ResEdit
- College courses:
- Pascal, C, Fortran 77, Assembly Code Programming, Computer Communications,
Software Development, System Specification, Software Testing,
Hardware Interfacing, Microprocessor Systems, Operating Systems,
Information Technology, Business Management and Quality Management.
- Character strengths: eye for detail, self-motivated, strives
to achieve excellence in any task undertaken, good team player.
Accomplishments:
- I developed a relational database for the meat industry using
Visual Basic, SQL and MS Access databases. The program can record
how a carcass is to be cut up, print out invoices, calculate costs,
send emails, print out form letters and sales posters, track costs
and several other administrative tasks. I sold a tailor made version
of the program for $10,500 CDN. This current program is much more
flexible and will be useful to small butchers throughout North America.
For further information, see http://www.msoft.ca/resume/what.htm.
- I have designed some professional web sites: See
http://www.braymo.com/ , http://www.kleerlee.com/
and http://www.msoft.ca/
as examples. The web sites I design will even work well on older
computers with slow connections, and make good use of Javascript,
style sheets and Search Engine Optimization techniques.
- Wrote 3 applets in Java each with over 200 lines of code.
- Authored 8 CBT Mathematics modules forming part of a package
called Mathwise (http://www.bham.ac.uk/mathwise/)
which is now available on CD for both PC and Apple Mac and is used
extensively at British higher educational institutions.
- Saw project through the various stages: planning, design, programming
& artwork, debugging, documentation and delivery.
- Worked on project for 4+ years.
- Trained up other Mathwise authors to write CBT materials
- Web editor of an online mathematics magazine (1996 - 1998).
- aimed to make the public aware of the importance of mathematics
in our society and to encourage high school students to study
Mathematics at University.
- CD version with enhanced multimedia capabilities distributed to
every high school in the UK where pre-university level mathematics
was taught.
- tasks included: interviewing people, obtaining articles and suitable
illustrations, putting the articles into HTML format, and getting
feed-back from schools.
- Magazine still in existence: (http://pass.maths.org.uk/)
- Co-authored a multi-media interactive video about Cambridge
University's Mathematics faculty (1994).
- Video clips, photographs and sound recordings I made were included.
- Formed part of a prestigious exhibition about Cambridge University
at Christies auction rooms in London which was attended by thousands
of visitors.
- Pioneered research in CBT at Cambridge University's Mathematics
Faculty (1989 - 1998)
- Have become very knowledgeable in interactive learning and how
people learn from a computer.
- Designed the software for an Intel 8051 emulator board that
would facilitate the writing, downloading, testing and debugging of
8051 programs (college project 1989).
Employment History:
- 2001- present: Self- employed as a Software consultant (
http://www.msoft.ca). I have been doing VB programming, Web design
Search Engine Optimization, and writing a technical manual
- 1998 - 99: Software engineer for the Numerical Algorithms Group
in Oxford and the University of Birmingham, England on the commercialisation
of a mathematics teaching package.
- Responsibilities were porting over from the Apple Mac to the
PC and bug fixing.
- Did a further month's work on the project in March 2000, from
my new home in Canada.
- 1989 - 1998: Research Assistant in Cambridge University at the
Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP)
working mostly as a computer programmer in the field of CBT.
Educational Qualifications:
- 1987 - 1989: Anglia Polytechnic University in Cambridge, England.
- Higher National Diploma in Software Engineering
averaging a merit. The course
was an introduction into embedded systems. The HND is usually seen
by British employers as equivalent to a degree.
- EITB (The Engineering Industry Training Board) certificate of validated
achievement in General engineering appreciation and engineering software
applications.
